THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE & FILM AT UBC PRESENTSNaked Cinema III: SHORTFALLS
CREATED IN COLLABORATION WITH STUDENTS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE & FILM

Directed & Produced by Professor Tom Scholte

– FINISHING SECOND CAN TEACH YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO PUT FIRST

Our contemporary obsession with competition gets the Naked Cinema treatment in this keenly observed triptych of high-impact short stories exposing the experience of being “second best” in all of its cringingly funny and, ultimately, liberating glory. An under-achieving hockey prospect shoulders the burden of his alpha-dad’s broken dreams while his sister flies completely under the radar. A beauty pageant winner and the first runner-up cling to a fragile friendship as expectations and buried resentments grow. A sexually frustrated bride-to-be begins to suspect that she is not number one in her fiancées heart and that her rival might be way to close for comfort. Laugh, cry, and find the light with these all too human almost-heroes sensitively portrayed by a talented cast of brave young actors.

Each year, students from the Department of Theatre and Film, spearheaded by award-winning Professor Tom Scholte, come together to create something especially audacious: a new feature film inspired by Lars von Trier's Dogme 95 Manifesto and stripped of all cinematic artifice.
