A member of the Department of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing since 1989, Stephen Malloy is nationally recognized for his brilliant interpretation of dramatic text and innovative style of directing modern classics for the theatre. Malloy’s study of the dramatization of the family and its inherent blood connections have led him to explore the links between ancient Greek theatre, Irish drama (in particular Samuel Beckett and Brian Friel) and the work of contemporary American playwright Sam Shepard. A prolific writer, musician, director, dramaturg and actor, Professor Malloy was appointed to the University of British Columbia in 1989, having been the co-founder and Artistic Director of the influential Coming Attractions Theatre Company since its inception in 1980. Partnered with producer Gerald Lunz (producer of This Hour has 22 Minutes, Made in Canada and Rick Mercer), Professor Malloy directed cutting edge theatre such as Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love at the National Arts Centre and the Canadian premiere of Bent by Martin Sherman. Professor Malloy co-wrote a touring production with Maureen Labonte (Literary Manager, Shaw Festival) for Ontario’s Penguin Theatre Company. Malloy’s award-winning play, Fallin’ in Love, has been produced by theatres in Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle. Malloy’s video projects include directing a professional dance video for Cathy Kyle (Toronto’s Dancemakers), and several music videos for Jealous Monk records, which have been distributed internationally. Malloy recently received funding from SSHRC, HSS and Theatre at UBC to direct a short film based on Prairie playwright Mia Martin’s script White Skates. His production of Samuel Beckett’s Catastrophe for the 2006 Beckett Centenary was awarded a grant from Culture Ireland. Professor Malloy studied acting at York University, completed a BA Theatre Honours in Directing at the University of Ottawa and holds an MFA in Directing from the University of Victoria. He is a former member of the Advisory Board for Canadian Actors Equity Association and the Hampton Committee at the University of British Columbia. Professor Malloy is recognized for the quality of his graduate students and is in high demand as a graduate supervisor. He is the Associate Head of Theatre Production at UBC and teaches in the BFA Professional Acting Program and MFA Directing Program. |
