~ an evening of theatre, song and revelry in celebration of Peter Loeffler

Join us for a celebration of the teacher who inspired generations of students at UBC, Dr. Peter Loeffler. Featuring alumni and current students, this hour of theatrical shorts will showcase the kind of avant-guard theatre that Peter loved, followed by a party in the Frederic Wood Theatre. All proceeds go towards the Peter Loeffler Memorial Prize in Theatre. This event is presented as part of UBC Alumni Weekend, a full day of events for the whole family, on Saturday May 26.

Peter Loeffler began teaching at UBC in 1972 and for thirty years taught theatre history to undergraduate and graduate students. His Introduction to Theatre course inspired first-year students to appreciate the power of theatre and its importance. He was a dedicated mentor for countless students from all specialties within the Department of Theatre. Peter passed away on January 18, 2002 after a short battle with cancer.

Peter was an inspirational figure and in many ways the heart of the department. A champion of the avant-garde and the unusual, he was notorious for “anonymously” funding small student productions, helping to foster in his students a greater understanding of the little miracles involved in making theatre. Peter was a recipient of the Killam Teaching Prize in 2000. www.peterloeffler.com

The hour of avant-garde theatrical shorts (which precedes our party) is devised by Theatre at UBC alumni Beverly Bardal and Gerald Vanderwoude and is generously sponsored by UBC alumnaBonnie Mah. Professor Emeritus Norman Young leads an acting ensemble of talented alumni including Beverly Bardal, Cam Cronin, Deb Pickman, Joe Procyk and a surprise guest, along with current theatre students Barbara Kozicki and Jordan Kerbs. A performance of the UBC Opera Ensemble will be a highlight of the evening’s entertainments. The creative team includes Belle Cheung (Stage Manager). Amanda Larder & Morgan Carrier (Scenography), Michelle Harrison(Crew), Jui Kang (Costumes) Matthew Norman (Projections) with Jay HenricksonLynn Burtonand Jim Fergusson. Presented with UBC Alumni Weekend, May 26, 2012. See all the day’s events at: www.alumni.ubc.ca/events/alumniweekend

“Who’s There?” is the first line in Hamlet, and it was Peter’s favorite quote with which to begin his memorable Theatre classes. Please answer, “I am” when we ask that question from the stage of the Frederic Wood in celebration of a great man of the theatre – Peter Loeffler.
